-- Hike of the Month –
February 20th (Sunday) -- Meet @ 9 AM
Mills Reservation Trail – Cedar Grove
2.1-mile Loop Trail – EASY – Mills Reservation is located on the First Watchung Mountain, one of three Watchung Mountains which are long, low ridges of volcanic origin in northern New Jersey.
There is a view of NYC!!
History: During World War II, an anti-aircraft gun or searchlight emplacement was made in Mills Reservation at the lookout point on the cliffs overlooking New York City. All that remains of this today is a circular cement platform. Earlier the platform may have been the base of a water tower for the steam machinery and firefighting system of the quarry there of Osborne & Marselis etc. There are also some reports that that cliff-edge location was used as a fire-beacon station in George Washington's communication, and earlier as a smoke-signal point by the Indians. Lenape Trail runs through the park.
